Datto RMM alternatives compared: NinjaOne, Atera, Syncro, N-able and ConnectWise head to head

Insights By The Helios team  ·  7 min read

Leaving Datto RMM is less a product decision than an ecosystem decision, and most comparison pages pretend otherwise. The console is competent. What you are actually weighing when you shop for a Datto RMM alternative is what happens to the Autotask integration, the Datto backup appliances, the ComStore components you quietly depend on, and the contract terms that brought you to this page in the first place. This is a head to head of the five products people actually shortlist, NinjaOne, Atera, Syncro, N-able and ConnectWise RMM, plus Helios, with pricing, migration effort and an honest note on what each one cannot replace.

Why people leave Datto RMM in the first place

Read the Capterra reviews of Datto RMM and two themes keep returning. The first is support: reviewers describe response times and escalation quality getting worse since the Kaseya acquisition. The second is commercial: auto-renewing multi-year agreements, billing disputes and notice periods that reviewers only discover when they try to leave. Neither complaint is about monitoring or patching. People leave Datto RMM over the relationship, not the agent.

If the contract is your immediate problem, we have written up the exit mechanics separately in our guide to getting out of a multi-year Kaseya contract. This piece assumes you are already free to move, or will be at renewal, and want to know where.

Every Datto RMM alternative at a glance

Prices below are as published at the time of writing, and quote-only means exactly that: the vendor will not print a number. Our RMM pricing comparison tracks the detail with dated checks.

NinjaOne: the closest like-for-like, minus the price tag on the website

NinjaOne is the most common landing spot for Datto leavers because the shape is familiar: strong per-endpoint monitoring, good Windows and third-party patching, a fast agent. Its template and script library is the nearest thing to ComStore you will find, though smaller. The catch is commercial. Pricing is quote-only per endpoint, contracts are annual, and the number you pay depends on how well you negotiate, which is a strange position for someone leaving Datto over opaque contract terms.

What you lose: the native Autotask pairing and Datto BCDR integration. Ninja has its own backup product and PSA integrations, but the single-vendor tie-in is gone. Migration: push the Ninja installer through a Datto RMM job, agents swap in days, rebuilding monitors and policies takes one to two weeks for a few hundred endpoints. Suits: five to twenty technician teams who will use their scale to negotiate.

Atera: cheapest for tiny teams, and it stays that way only if you stay tiny

Atera publishes its prices, bills per technician, and lets you pay monthly. For a one or two person shop with several hundred endpoints, the arithmetic is hard to beat, because devices are free and technicians are the unit. Monitoring and policy depth is shallower than Datto's, which cuts both ways: less to configure, less to rebuild, and less to lean on for complex estates.

What you lose: ComStore's component depth. Atera's shared script library covers the common cases but you will rewrite your custom components. Autotask goes too, replaced by Atera's own built-in PSA, which is serviceable rather than deep. Migration: among the fastest here, days for agents, under a week for policies. Suits: one to three technicians who value simplicity over depth.

Syncro: RMM, PSA and billing in one, priced per user

Syncro folds RMM, PSA, invoicing and payment collection into one per-user subscription, published at roughly $139 per user per month. If you are leaving both Datto RMM and Autotask at once, Syncro replaces the pair, and it is the only product on this list with proper recurring contract billing built in.

What you lose: monitoring depth, again. Syncro's community scripts stand in for ComStore adequately. The bigger effort is the PSA side: migrating tickets, contracts and billing data from Autotask is the real project, and it can take a month of evenings. Migration: agents in days, the PSA migration in weeks. Suits: small MSPs who want the whole stack, and can live with per-user pricing as they hire.

N-able N-central: powerful, heavy, and priced by conversation

N-central is the most capable RMM here and the only one with serious network device monitoring, which Datto Networking users should note. It is also the heaviest: probes, policy hierarchies and an interface that assumes a dedicated administrator. Pricing is quote-only per device on annual terms, so you are trading one negotiated contract for another.

What you lose: Autotask stays available via integration, so less than elsewhere. Automation Manager replaces ComStore credibly. Migration: the longest on this list, realistically three to six weeks to do properly. Suits: ten technicians and up. Below that, you are buying an engine you will never open the bonnet of.

ConnectWise RMM: only if you are already a ConnectWise shop

ConnectWise RMM on the Asio platform makes sense in exactly one situation: you already run ConnectWise PSA and want one vendor. Pricing is quote-only, the sales cycle is sales-led, and reviews of the wider ConnectWise estate raise the same support and billing complaints that pushed you off Datto. Migration: weeks, plus the procurement process itself. Suits: existing ConnectWise PSA customers, and almost nobody else.

Helios: the small-team option, with published limits

Helios merges RMM and PSA in one platform on flat monthly pricing: £99, £199 or £399 per MSP by device band, every feature on every plan, monthly billing, cancel any time. Patching covers Windows and third-party via winget, and an AI agent investigates alerts and triages tickets under per-client approval rules. The honest gaps: no network hardware monitoring, so Datto Networking users should look at N-central, and no recurring contract billing yet, only time tracking through to QuickBooks invoice export. The script library is younger than ComStore, and you will bring your own PowerShell for the exotic cases. Migration: agents in days via a Datto RMM job, policies within a week. Suits: one to five technicians, up to a few hundred endpoints, whether the machines belong to clients or to your own company.

Rule of thumb: the agent swap is never the hard part. Deploy the new agent through your existing Datto RMM job engine and it is done in days. Budget your real time for rebuilding monitors, policies and the ComStore components you forgot you relied on.

How to actually decide

  • Count your custom components. Export your ComStore and custom component list before you trial anything. The vendor whose library covers most of it wins a week of your life back.
  • Read the renewal clause before the feature list. If you are leaving over contract terms, do not sign a new quote-only annual agreement without negotiating the notice period first.
  • Trial with real endpoints. Twenty production machines for a fortnight tells you more than any comparison table, including this one.

Where this fits with Helios

Most of this decision is arithmetic and contract reading, not tooling. Where Helios earns its place on the shortlist is the commercial model: published flat pricing, monthly billing, no per-endpoint growth penalty and no negotiation, which is the exact inverse of the terms most Datto leavers are escaping. It will not suit a twenty-technician MSP with racks of managed switches. For a one to five person team, it is built to be useful in the first hour.

Helios is a single platform combining RMM, PSA and an AI agent, at a flat £99 to £399 a month. 14-day trial, no card, no feature gating. Start free.
